Self-help - The Secret
The Secret is a film, a book, a philosophy to live your life by, and more. Inspired by a book written in 1910 called ‘The Science of Getting Rich’ by Wallace D Wattles, author Rhonda Byrne has updated and brought the information contained in it to life for our use in the 21st century.
The basic premise of The Secret is that what we give our attention to affects how we feel, and that whatever we’re feeling sends a vibration or wave out into the universe. So positive thoughts bring positive feelings and these attract positive experiences to us. If we constantly think of lack, we feel lacking in some way, and that is what we will attract. This is because our feelings attract things that are vibrating on the same level. So what we focus on really does expand.
For Instance
For instance, have you ever noticed that when you’re having a good day everything seems to work out well, and when you’re having a bad day everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. This is because energy flows where our attention goes and if we’re feeling upbeat and positive we will attract those things to us which correspond to that. And if we’re feeling upbeat and positive, all those little things which may have bothered us on a bad day, won’t seem so important now either.
The Secret and the Law of Attraction
The Secret uses the Law of Attraction to explain all of this. The Law of Attraction states that like attracts like, so that if we constantly think negatively, then that is what we’ll attract. Conversely, if we can learn to think more positively, then we will attract more and more positive experiences to us.
Energy Flows Where Attention Goes
It’s our thoughts and actions which control the type of energy we’re sending out. Every little thing we do or are begins with a thought. For instance, you couldn’t prepare a meal without first thinking about what you were going to cook and how you were going to do it. But how do you approach that meal? Do you approach it with dread because you hate your kitchen or don’t like to cook? Or do you approach the task with joy because you love to feed your family tasty and nutritious meals? Whichever way you do it, the universe is responding to your thoughts and feelings and will bring you experiences which correspond with that.
How to Use The Secret
Gratitude
Gratitude (like all of our thoughts and feelings) is magnetic. If we cook that meal with even a little gratitude for the food we’re preparing, for the heat that cooks it, and for all the different resources that have brought the ingredients to our kitchen, then that meal will be that much better when it’s served. And so will our temper! Nothing good can ever come into our lives without gratitude. Even if there are things in our lives that we don’t feel grateful for, we should make a practise of finding something to appreciate about them. Things don’t disappear by our constant cursing of them. This will only serve to bring them closer and (on top of that) bring us more things to curse.
So learn to make gratitude a habit. First thing in the morning, begin your day well by thinking of the things you have to be grateful for, and then look for more things to show gratitude for during the day. Then, last thing at night before you turn over to sleep, think about what you have had to be grateful for during the day. Allow yourself to feel as much love and gratitude for your life and the things in it, as you can muster and the universe will return it to you multiplied many times.
Create a Gratitude Journal
A good way to cultivate the habit of gratitude is to make a journal. Buy a really pretty book with blank pages and set the intention that you will write down at least five things a day that you’re grateful for. It may seem hard at first if your life isn’t working out too well at the moment, but if you have your vision, be thankful for that; if you can hear, be thankful for that. Just be thankful for even the little things you do have and as your list starts to grow you’ll finish up with a written record of what’s good in your life to uplift and inspire you whenever you need it.
Create a Vision Board
For specific goals, try creating a vision board. This is a cork board or large piece of cardboard that you use to make a visual representation of your hopes and dreams. Use cut-out pictures from your favourite magazines or lovely pictures from old birthday cards. You could use your own handwritten notes or type them up. Whatever you do, make sure your board accurately represents your dream as it will be when it’s fulfilled and that it’s eye-catching and enjoyable to look at. Then take your board out at least once a day and look at it. Doing this will give you a burst of positive energy as you think about your dream coming to life and you can add to your board anytime you come across anything that will fit. Imagine as you look at your board, that your dreams can become reality and don’t let negative thinking interfere with your dreams. They wouldn’t be ‘your’ dreams if there was no way that you could fulfil them…
Do What’s Necessary
Take whatever action you need to, that makes you happy and that you feel good doing. Our dreams will always remain nothing more than dreams unless we’re prepared to take action on them. And make sure you’re acting in accordance with your dreams too. For instance, if your dream is to have a new home and you’re reluctant to clear out the old one, then you’re asking for one thing and proving another by your actions (or lack of them.) Once you get clear on what you want and why you want it and are prepared to do what it takes to fulfil your dreams, the universe usually steps in to help.
There Are No Coincidences
Now you know the secret. Everything in the universe works on laws and principles and the Law of Attraction is just that, a law. What you put out always comes back to you, so I hope you can see that it makes sense to begin to live a little more positively and begin to attract more of the good things into your life.
